14-year-old driver hits pedestrian

CORNVILLE - An underage driver allegedly struck a woman walking her dog in Cornville on Friday afternoon after taking her mother's car without permission.

Yavapai County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene on Swinging Bridge Lane near Coyote Lane in Cornville. Verde Valley Fire District EMS personnel were treating a 62-year-old woman who had been struck by a 2001 silver Toyota sedan. The car was driven by 14-year-old girl who lives on Farm Circle. The girl allegedly admitted taking her mom's car without her mother's knowledge and then losing control while driving on Swinging Bridge Lane.

The car left the roadway and struck the woman and the dog. The woman was treated at Verde Valley Medical Center for broken leg bones and scheduled for transport to an another hospital for additional assessment and treatment. Her current condition is not known but does not appear life threatening based on the preliminary report.

The woman's dog was also hit by the car and ran from the scene. It was later located by the woman's family and taken to a local veterinarian for minor injuries.

Deputies released the girl to the custody of her mother pending a follow-up and possible criminal charges. Officers detected no signs of DUI at the scene but deputies took a urine sample from the minor for testing.
