With a thriving preschool, the administration is working with Camp Verde Head Start to fill 20 slots that have been doled out to the district.
Beaver Creek School will also be working with Rimrock Public High School, a charter school in the same unincorporated community, to help transport PRHS students living in Cornville.
BCS has 43 students in preschool and plans to expand to a second classroom. Head Start's expansion funds allowed for additional available slots, 20 of which went to Beaver Creek. That allows for one teacher and one aide, according to Superintendent Karin Ward. Now preschool students can be evaluated by the preschool and Head Start workers to determined which ones will be placed in Head Start.
Rimrock Public High School Administrator Kathleen McCabe had approached Beaver Creek School last month about letting RPHS students catch a ride on BCS buses.
Monday, the governing board voted 3-1 to charge RPHS $1.50 per mile to pick up students on the way back from Mingus Union, where BCS delivers high school students. That amounts to about $18 a day.
Transportation Director Jim Womack said he checked the per-mile rates other district schools charged for out-of-district transportation and "I figured $1.50 would be plenty."
The issue now goes to the school's attorney, who will draft an agreement. The board expressed concerns over liability.
"The Trust will cover it as long as the attorney approves it," Ward said.
