SEDONA - A lightning-ignited fire burning in the Secret Mountain Wilderness near Sedona grew to 65 acres before firefighters established a line around it Wednesday. Mormon Lake and Flagstaff Hotshots were brought in, supported by a helicopter
The fire was first reported Friday, Sept. 4, located about 10 miles northwest of Sedona. Coconino National Forest spokesperson Brienne Magee described it as 100-percent contained.
"There is still some light activity in the interior," she said. "That may produce a bit more smoke over the next few days, but no further growth is expected."
Fire behavior remained moderate even though the fire never received significant rainfall. The forest service says the general area has received little rain this year at all.
The fire is located in rough terrain with thick regeneration and dead fuels from the Lost Complex Fire, which charred 1,800 acres there in 1994.
The Maroon Fire is the largest of 12 fires that started over the Labor Day Weekend. The other nine lightning-caused and two human-caused fires were all less than one acre.
